The Children’s Book Project

Children's Book Project

In our society literacy is the key to personal fulfillment and employment opportunities, and is also crucial for participation in democracy. Research has shown again and again that children to whom books are read have an easier time learning to read. Even in this age of electronic communications, holding a book in your hands is the first step to literacy.

The Children's Book Project is a non-profit, volunteeer run organization dedicated to putting books into the hands of children who otherwise might not have them. It was founded in San Francisco in 1992 by Vicki Pollack. I was privileged to be on the Board of Directors of The Children's Book Project from 1995 to 2003.

Supported by grants from foundations as well as many generous individuals, the Children's Book Project has partnered with a wide range of organizations, facilities and programs serving the needs of economically disadvantaged children. The Project has given over 1.5 MILLION free new and used books to children!
